The Indian government has issued an advisory urging its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Libya. This comes as a partial modification of a 2016 advisory that completely banned Indian nationals from traveling to the African country. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) cited security concerns as the reason for the updated advice.
In a statement, the MEA advised Indian nationals already present in Libya to exercise caution and avoid inter-province travel by road. The statement emphasized the importance of staying in contact with the Indian Embassy in Tripoli, providing an emergency phone number for this purpose: +218943992046.
The 2016 travel ban was imposed due to the prevailing security situation in Libya, including security threats and challenges to the lives of Indian nationals in the country. The MEA had stated that all immigration authorities were notified of the ban, which came into effect on May 3, 2016, and remained in place until further orders.
This latest advisory reflects the Indian government’s ongoing assessment of the security situation in Libya and its commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its citizens abroad.
