India and Malaysia have taken a significant step forward in strengthening their bilateral relationship, elevating their partnership to a ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’. The announcement came during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, on Tuesday.
The two leaders signed at least eight agreements, demonstrating their commitment to expanding cooperation in several sectors. A key agreement focuses on promoting the recruitment of Indian workers in Malaysia and ensuring the protection of their interests. This agreement is expected to facilitate the movement of skilled Indian workers to Malaysia, contributing to both countries’ economic growth.
Recognizing the importance of regional trade, the leaders also stressed the need to expedite the review of the free trade agreement between India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This move reflects the shared desire to enhance economic ties and facilitate smoother trade flows within the region.
During their talks, Modi and Ibrahim explored several avenues for collaboration, including areas like new technology, defense, and digital sectors. They identified potential for cooperation in semiconductors, Fintech, defense industries, artificial intelligence (AI), and quantum computing.
Furthermore, India and Malaysia have agreed to establish a Digital Council and create a Start-up Alliance to foster collaboration in digital technologies. The aim is to leverage their expertise and resources to develop innovative solutions and promote digital innovation within their respective economies.
The two countries also discussed strengthening cooperation in the defense sector, exploring new avenues for mutual support and collaboration. They underscored the shared need for a united front against terrorism and extremism, recognizing the growing importance of regional security cooperation.
President Droupadi Murmu, in a separate meeting with Ibrahim, welcomed the upgrade in bilateral relations and expressed satisfaction with the action-oriented roadmap for implementing the ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’ across various sectors. She emphasized India’s commitment to a peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, aligning with Malaysia’s role as the ASEAN chair in 2025.
The President also highlighted Malaysia’s significance as a key partner for India within ASEAN and its vital role in India’s Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific vision.
Meanwhile, Jaideep Mazumdar, an official from the Ministry of External Affairs, revealed that Malaysia has expressed support for India’s bid to become a permanent member of a reformed UN Security Council. He also stated that Malaysia has agreed to consider India as a source for procuring various defense platforms and hardware.
These developments signal a positive shift in the India-Malaysia relationship, with both countries committed to deepening their cooperation across various sectors. The strategic partnership and the agreements signed are likely to contribute to enhanced economic growth, technological advancement, and regional stability in the years to come.
