India and Sri Lanka have commenced their 10th joint military exercise, ‘Mitra Shakti,’ on August 12th, 2023. The exercise, which will run until August 25th, aims to enhance interoperability and share best practices between the two nations’ armed forces. Held at the Army Training School in Maduru Oya, Sri Lanka, the exercise focuses on strengthening joint military capabilities for counter-insurgency operations in semi-urban environments under the United Nations mandate.
The training program emphasizes tactical drills designed to effectively respond to terrorist actions. This includes establishing joint command posts, setting up intelligence and surveillance centers, securing landing sites, and executing special operations. The exercise incorporates a range of drills, such as small team insertions and extractions, special heliborne operations, cordon and search operations, and the utilization of drones and counter-drone systems.
‘Mitra Shakti’ is an annual event that alternates between India and Sri Lanka. The previous exercise was held in Pune, India, in November 2023. This year, the Indian contingent comprises 106 personnel from a Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles, alongside other arms and services. The Sri Lankan side is represented by the Gajaba Regiment.
The primary objective of ‘Mitra Shakti’ is to enhance the military effectiveness of both nations through improved cooperation, interoperability, and camaraderie. The exercise serves as a platform to strengthen defense ties and bilateral relations between India and Sri Lanka. This collaborative effort signifies the commitment of both countries to regional security and stability.
