India Braces for Heavy Rainfall and Heatwave Conditions

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rainfall in several states across southern and northern India, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall likely over Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu are expected to experience heavy rainfall on May 23rd, while Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, and Rayalaseema will see isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall. Isolated heavy rainfall is also predicted for Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka on May 20th and 23rd, respectively, and for Lakshadweep on May 22nd. The Andaman & Nicobar Islands may experience widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall over the Nicobar Islands from May 20th to 23rd.

In North India, a western disturbance and cyclonic circulation will cause isolated to scattered rainfall over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand until May 21st. Strong surface winds are likely in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Rajasthan during the next five days. Odisha, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, and Jharkhand will receive light rainfall until May 23rd, while Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim may experience widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning.

Northeast India will see heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura for the next five days, accompanied by gusty winds. Isolated heavy rainfall is predicted for Sikkim until May 21st, and isolated very heavy rainfall is expected over Assam and Meghalaya on May 20th.

IMD has also issued a heatwave warning for many areas of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in these regions until May 23rd. Additionally, parts of Konkan and Goa, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Odisha may experience hot and humid weather. Warm night conditions are expected in East Rajasthan until May 23rd.
