India Braces for Scorching Heatwave in Several Regions as IMD Issues Red Alerts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted severe heatwave conditions in several parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh over the next 24 hours. A red heatwave alert has been issued for Jodhpur and Bikaner, with Pilani expected to witness temperatures exceeding 48 degrees Celsius in the next 28 hours. According to IMD Jaipur Director Radheshyam Sharma, maximum temperatures in various areas of Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaipur, Bharatpur, and Kota have already surpassed 45 degrees Celsius in the past 24 hours. Pilani recorded a maximum temperature of 46.6 degrees Celsius during this period. Sharma anticipates a further rise in maximum temperatures by 2 degrees Celsius in the next 48 hours and has issued a red alert for most areas of Jodhpur and Bikaner, indicating that severe heat waves will persist. The maximum temperature in Bharatpur, Jaipur, and Kota is predicted to cross 46 degrees Celsius between May 23-25. The weather department has also forecast heat wave conditions in isolated pockets of East Uttar Pradesh on May 21 and May 22. Similarly, Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, northeast Madhya Pradesh are likely to face heat waves from May 21 to May 25; Vidarbha from May 22 to May 25; and north Madhya Maharashtra from May 22 to May 24, 2024. Delhi is expected to experience a maximum temperature of 44 degrees on Tuesday. Earlier on Monday, Najafgarh in Delhi recorded the highest temperature in the country at 47.8 degrees Celsius. The weather forecasting agency has predicted no immediate respite from the extreme heat and has issued a red alert for Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Chandigarh, stating that the heatwave will continue for several days. Temperatures have been markedly above normal (with an increase of 5.1 degrees or more) in many areas, including Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Bihar. In response to the severe heatwave, the Rajasthan Health Department has taken precautionary measures and trained 570 medical officers to handle heatstroke cases. All necessary guidelines have been communicated to officials in each district.
