Multiple Indian states brace for intense heatwaves in the coming days as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts maximum temperatures soaring above 45 degrees Celsius. From May 18 to 21, severe heatwave conditions are anticipated in portions of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi. A fresh wave of heat will also impact eastern and central India beginning on Saturday. The IMD has issued a red alert for western Rajasthan, emphasizing the need for extreme caution for vulnerable populations, including infants, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions. Orange alerts have been issued for Haryana, Punjab, eastern Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Gujarat, highlighting potential health risks for susceptible individuals. Prolonged exposure to the sun and strenuous activities increase the likelihood of heat-related illnesses. A heatwave is declared when a weather station’s maximum temperature reaches 40 degrees Celsius in plains, 37 degrees in coastal areas, and 30 degrees in hilly regions, with a deviation of at least 4.5 degrees from normal. A severe heatwave occurs when the deviation exceeds 6.4 degrees. Rainfall activity is anticipated in several districts of Kerala from May 18 to 20 due to strong westerly and southwesterly winds. The IMD has issued orange alerts for various districts, warning of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds until May 20. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea along the southern Kerala coast due to squally weather with strong winds. Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu may also experience some relief from the heat, with the Meteorological Department forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. The southwest monsoon is expected to advance into the South Andaman Sea, parts of the southeast Bay of Bengal, and Nicobar Islands around May 19.
