India Budget Allocates Funds for Temple Development, Aims to Boost Tourism

India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her Budget speech on Tuesday, announced significant funding for the development of temple corridors in Bihar and Odisha, aiming to transform them into world-class pilgrim and tourist destinations. The Vishnupad Temple Corridor in Gaya and Mahabodhi Temple Corridor in Bodh Gaya, both in Bihar, hold immense spiritual significance, Sitharaman stated.

The government plans to implement the successful Kashi Vishwanath Temple corridor model in Bodh Gaya, facilitating a comprehensive development of the area. Sitharaman also highlighted the allocation of special funds for the Rajgir Jain Temple site, emphasizing its religious significance for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. The 20th Tirthankara Munisuvrata temple within the Jain Temple complex is of historical importance, and the Saptharishi hot springs, known as the Brahmakund, hold sacred value. A comprehensive development initiative for Rajgir is planned to enhance its appeal to tourists and pilgrims.

In Odisha, the government will provide assistance for development projects that leverage the state’s abundant tourism potential. Temples, monuments, wildlife sanctuaries, natural landscapes, and pristine beaches contribute to Odisha’s allure as a premier tourist destination.

Beyond the focus on tourism, the Finance Minister presented an economic policy framework aimed at ushering in next-generation reforms to boost economic growth. This was Sitharaman’s seventh budget presentation, and she opted for a striking off-white checkered handloom saree paired with a contrasting purple and pink-hued blouse for the occasion.
