India-Canada Ties Marred by ‘Decade-Old Issues’ and Threats, Says Envoy

India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, has characterized the relationship between the two countries as marred by “decade-old issues” that have resurfaced with unfortunate crimes and threats. He emphasized that Indians themselves, not foreigners, should determine India’s fate. Speaking at an event in Montreal, Verma stated that discussions are underway at the government level through diplomatic channels and expressed hope for a resolution to the issues. However, he raised concerns about threats emanating from Canada and reiterated that decisions regarding India’s destiny should be made by its citizens, urging those living abroad to participate in the electoral process. Verma also emphasized the importance of understanding and respecting cultural diversity between the two nations. These comments come in the wake of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arresting three Indian nationals in connection with the assassination of Canadian Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The three individuals, identified as Karanpreet Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karan Brar, face charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. The incident has raised questions about potential links to the Indian government, though India has denied involvement. External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has stated that India will await information from Canadian authorities regarding the accused.
