India Celebrates 78th Independence Day with ‘Viksit Bharat’ Theme

India is set to commemorate its 78th Independence Day on August 15th, 2024, marking the nation’s freedom from British colonial rule, a struggle that spanned nearly two centuries. This year’s theme, ‘Viksit Bharat,’ signifies the vision of a developed nation by the year 2047, reflecting the government’s commitment to transform India into a thriving and prosperous country. This vision aligns with the nation’s 100th year of independence from colonial rule.

India’s journey to independence officially began with the ‘Revolt of 1857,’ and later gained momentum under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi in the early 20th century. The Indian Independence Bill was introduced in the British House of Commons on July 4th, 1947, leading to the formal declaration of independence on August 15th, 1947. On the eve of India’s independence, Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of Independent India, famously declared it a ‘Tryst with Destiny.’

On Independence Day, the Prime Minister of India traditionally hoists the national flag and addresses the nation, outlining the nation’s progress, achievements, and future goals. This year’s speech will mark the 11th consecutive Independence Day address by PM Modi, and the first during his third term. The speech will be broadcast live on Doordarshan at 7:30 am and will also be streamed on the Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) YouTube channel, available on social media platforms including X (formerly Twitter) via @PIB_India and the PMO Twitter handle.

Independence Day is a national holiday in India, celebrated annually with patriotic fervor and enthusiasm. The Prime Minister’s address draws a large audience, including school children and esteemed individuals from various fields, serving as a platform for outlining future policies and goals. It’s a day to honor the sacrifices of freedom fighters who fought for India’s independence, including those who remain unnamed in the country’s freedom struggle. The day marks a historic milestone for India as it reflects upon its achievements and embarks on the journey towards a brighter future.
