India Denies Consular Access Request for Nikhil Gupta, Extradited to US for Alleged Murder-for-Hire Plot

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India has confirmed that they have not received any request for consular access from Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national currently facing charges in the United States. Gupta was extradited to the US on June 14th, accused of being involved in a murder-for-hire plot against Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in New York.

The MEA Spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, stated that while they have not received any direct request from Gupta, his family has contacted them, and they are currently assessing what assistance they can provide.

Pannun, who holds both American and Canadian citizenship, was allegedly targeted by Gupta for his activism. Gupta was apprehended in the Czech Republic last year at the US government’s request.

US Attorney General Merrick Garland has declared that Gupta will now face justice within the American legal system, emphasizing that the US will not tolerate attempts to silence or harm its citizens.

Jeffrey Chabrowe, Gupta’s attorney, has expressed that this is a complex situation for both India and the US, urging caution against hasty conclusions. He has also stated their commitment to pursuing Gupta’s defense vigorously, ensuring he receives full due process despite external pressures.

Federal prosecutors accuse Gupta of hiring a hitman to kill Gurpatwant Singh and paying USD 15,000 in advance. However, Gupta, through his lawyer, has vehemently denied these allegations.

FBI Director Christopher Wray has declared that the agency will not tolerate attempts by foreign nationals or any other individuals to suppress constitutionally protected freedoms within the United States. He assured that the FBI will continue collaborating with domestic and international partners to safeguard citizens’ rights and freedoms.
