India Dominates Day Two at Chess Olympiad in Budapest

India continued its dominant performance at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest, securing victories in both the open and women’s sections on day two. The second-seeded Indian men’s team completely outplayed Iceland with a resounding 4-0 win, while the top-seeded women’s team dominated the Czech Republic 3.5-0.5.

The second round saw Gukesh, the World Championship challenger and a standout performer at the Chennai Olympiad two years ago, make his tournament debut. Playing with black pieces on the top board, the 18-year-old Chennai prodigy defeated Vignir Stefansson, starting his campaign on a positive note. Prior to Gukesh’s victory, Arjun Erigaisi had secured a win against Hannes Stefansson on the second board.

Vidit Gujrathi added to India’s lead on the third board with a victory against Hilmir Heimisson. Later, Pendyala Harikrishna clinched a win in a prolonged game against Helgi Gretarsson, ensuring India maintained its perfect record with eight wins in as many games.

The women’s team also showcased impressive performances. Divya Deshmukh and Vantika Agrawal delivered wins on the second and third boards respectively, defeating Natalie Kanakova and Tereza Rodshtein. Dronavalli Harika, playing her first game of the tournament, faced a tough challenge from Julia Movsesian on the top board but emerged victorious, securing India’s third win in the match. Tania Sachdev, however, settled for a draw against Martina Korenova.

India’s continued dominance in both the men’s and women’s sections sets the stage for an exciting competition as the tournament progresses. With the team’s momentum and individual brilliance on display, India is poised to challenge for top honors at the Chess Olympiad.
