India has witnessed a decline in its ranking on the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Gender Gap index, slipping two spots to 129th place. According to the rankings released on June 12, Iceland continues to hold the top position. Among South Asian countries, India stands at fifth place, with Pakistan occupying the lowest position among neighboring nations such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan.
In a statement on social media, the WEF acknowledged that global efforts to bridge the gender gap have shown only modest progress. The organization emphasized that despite the slow improvements, initiatives to increase women’s political participation could have a substantial impact in this election year.
The WEF’s Global Gender Gap Report examines the performance of 146 economies worldwide. Sudan ranked the lowest in the index, while Pakistan slipped three spots to 145th place.
While acknowledging some positive developments, the report highlights the need for renewed global commitment to achieving gender parity, particularly in economic and political spheres. WEF Managing Director Saadia Zahidi emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue, as highlighted by the sluggish and incremental gains observed in this year’s report.
