In a bid to alleviate the frustration of long queues at highway toll stations, the Indian government has taken a major step towards modernizing its toll collection system. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has implemented an innovative electronic toll collection mechanism leveraging satellite technology. This new system, based on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), will be integrated into existing toll collection processes, coexisting with the popular FASTag and Automatic Number Plate Recognition systems.
The heart of the new system lies in On-Board Units (OBUs) equipped with GNSS technology. These devices will enable vehicles to automatically pay tolls based on the distance traveled, eliminating the need for manual transactions at toll plazas. To facilitate this seamless transition, exclusive lanes will be created at toll plazas specifically for vehicles equipped with GNSS OBUs.
