India Extends Budgetary Support to Maldives, Signaling Improved Ties

On Monday, May 13th, the Maldivian government extended its gratitude to India for providing crucial budget support. Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer described it as a gesture of goodwill, reflecting the enduring friendship between the two nations. This development follows Zameer’s visit to India and his meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, signaling a significant shift in bilateral relations. The budgetary support, amounting to USD 50 million, will be utilized for infrastructure and community development projects. The Maldivian Foreign Ministry expressed its appreciation for India’s ongoing assistance, acknowledging its importance in fostering mutual benefit and prosperity between the two countries. During his visit to India on May 8th, Zameer condemned the derogatory remarks made against India and affirmed Maldives’ commitment to preventing their recurrence. In welcoming Zameer, Jaishankar emphasized India’s Neighborhood First policy and SAGAR vision as guiding principles in strengthening ties with neighboring countries. This meeting has facilitated enhanced convergence of perspectives between the two nations across various domains.
