The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Kerala on July 31, following devastating landslides in Wayanad district that claimed 116 lives. The incident occurred during a red alert for heavy showers in the state. The main bridge in Chooralmala town collapsed, and the Chaliyar River swept away bodies and cars.
Meanwhile, Karnataka is on red alert today. Other states under orange alert include Goa, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam, Meghalaya, Gangetic West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim.
The IMD has predicted “extremely heavy rainfall” over Maharashtra for the next three days. Goa will experience “very heavy” showers until August 3, and similar weather conditions are expected in Maharashtra today. “Very heavy rainfall” is forecast for Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh over the coming three days.
Uttarakhand is expected to experience “very heavy” precipitation until August 1, while Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh will face the same conditions on July 31 and August 1. Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh are predicted to experience “very heavy” rainfall on August 1.
Isolated heavy rainfall is likely in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan until August 3 and in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh until August 2. The weather agency has also predicted “extremely heavy rainfall” over Karnataka on July 31.
According to the IMD’s press release dated July 30, “Very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe on 31st July & 01st August; Coastal & South Interior Karnataka on 01st August.” The weather agency has predicted “very heavy rainfall” in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Odisha until August 3.
The weather bulletin further states, “Isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura” till August 2; “Gangetic West Bengal during 31st July – 02nd August, Arunachal Pradesh on 02nd & 03rd August; Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim” till August 3.
