India Gripped by Severe Heatwave, Delhi Sizzles at 46°C, Red Alert Issued

India is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 46° Celsius in parts of Delhi. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, warning that the severe heatwave conditions will persist until June 19. The IMD has also predicted heatwave conditions in several other regions, including parts of Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Jharkhand.

On Tuesday morning, Delhi recorded a temperature of 34.8 degrees Celsius at 08:30 am, while Ayanagar in Delhi reported a maximum temperature of over 46.4 degrees Celsius on Monday.

While the northern parts of the country are battling scorching heat, the northeastern states are expected to experience heavy rainfall in the coming days. The IMD has predicted extremely heavy rainfall (above 20 cms) over Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur in the next 3-5 days.

IMD scientist Soma Sen has stated that a western disturbance is expected over Bihar and Jharkhand in two days, and south-westerly winds from the Arabian Sea may bring some relief to Punjab and Haryana from 18-19 June. Additionally, a thunderstorm-related orange alert has been issued for Madhya Pradesh.

The IMD’s forecasts highlight the contrasting weather patterns across India, with the north grappling with extreme heat and the northeast bracing for heavy rainfall. This situation underscores the importance of staying informed about weather updates and taking necessary precautions to protect oneself from the elements.
