The inaugural International Solar Festival 2024, held on September 5-6, saw India taking a leading role in pushing for global solar energy adoption. The event, hosted by the International Solar Alliance (ISA), brought together 119 member and signatory countries to discuss the future of solar energy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his virtual address, emphasized the need for a global shift towards renewable energy sources, particularly solar. He highlighted the importance of democratizing solar technology and manufacturing to help developing countries benefit from its potential. “The world must collectively address the imbalance in renewables’ investments,” Modi stated, underscoring India’s commitment to working towards a green and inclusive future.
India’s Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, echoed this sentiment, noting India’s commitment to supporting developing nations in their clean energy transitions. He emphasized that the festival reflects India’s dedication to a sustainable future, urging collective action towards an energy transition led by governments, youth, communities, and the private sector.
Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General of the ISA, highlighted the organization’s efforts in accelerating the growth of solar energy globally. He stressed the need for increased investment in solar energy, particularly in countries where it is currently underserved. “Our mission is to make solar the foundation for a prosperous and sustainable planet,” Mathur stated, emphasizing the role of solar energy in driving economic development and global transformation.
During the festival, the ISA announced its exclusive discussions with Africa50 to potentially manage the ISA’s proposed Africa Solar Facility (ASF). This $200 million initiative aims to unlock investment in distributed solar projects across Africa, bridging the gap in underserved markets where smaller project sizes and perceived risks have hindered investment.
The festival also saw participation from leaders of various countries, including Bhutan and Mauritius, who praised the ISA for its efforts in supporting solar energy development. Bhutan’s Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay, acknowledged the ISA’s contributions to rural solar energy projects through regulatory support and capacity building. Mauritius’ Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, highlighted the ISA’s role in helping Mauritius, a climate-vulnerable Small Island Developing State, achieve its goal of 30% solar energy by 2030.
The International Solar Festival 2024 served as a crucial platform for fostering collaboration and innovation in the global pursuit of a solar-powered future. The event brought together heads of state, diplomats, business and community leaders, youth, and experts to discuss and implement strategies for ensuring solar energy reaches underserved regions. Through this gathering, the ISA seeks to catalyze stronger collaboration and innovative financial mechanisms to accelerate the transition towards a sustainable, solar-powered world.
