India is poised to take a monumental leap towards bolstering its defense capabilities and reducing reliance on foreign imports with the inauguration of its first private military aircraft manufacturing facility on Monday, October 28th. This joint venture between European aerospace giant Airbus SE and India’s leading conglomerate TATA Advanced Systems marks a pivotal moment in the nation’s quest for self-reliance in the defense sector. The facility, located in Gujarat, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez of Spain, highlighting the international collaboration driving this initiative.
The facility is set to produce the C-295 transport aircraft, a critical addition to the Indian military’s fleet. These versatile aircraft, capable of carrying up to nine metric tonnes or 71 troops, will serve as replacements for the aging Avro cargo planes that have been in service for over six decades. The C-295 is also expected to replace the Russian-made An-72 transporters, nearing the end of their operational life, further reinforcing India’s strategic shift towards indigenously manufactured defense equipment.
This ambitious project stems from a $2.6 billion contract signed three years ago between Airbus and India for the procurement of 56 C-295 transporters. While the initial 16 aircraft will be manufactured in Spain, the remaining 40 will be produced at the newly inaugurated facility in India. The project will see the active participation of Bharat Electronics Ltd. and Bharat Dynamics Ltd., further strengthening the domestic defense ecosystem.
The inaugural delivery of the first C-295 is scheduled for 2026, with the remaining aircraft expected to be delivered by August 2031. This gradual rollout ensures a seamless transition for the Indian military, progressively enhancing its capabilities and gradually phasing out older aircraft. The project underscores India’s commitment to fostering a vibrant domestic defense manufacturing industry.
This significant development aligns with India’s broader objective of minimizing its reliance on foreign-made equipment, especially from Russia, which has traditionally been the country’s primary supplier of weapons. However, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has disrupted weapon supply chains and underscored the importance of indigenously produced defense systems.
