Amidst the escalating conflict in Syria, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a stark warning to its citizens: avoid all travel to Syria. The urgent advisory, released late Friday night, comes in response to significant rebel advances and the increasingly volatile situation in the country. Rebel forces have reportedly gained control of key Syrian cities, including Daraa – the birthplace of the 2011 Syrian uprising – sparking concerns of intensified fighting and a potential push towards the capital, Damascus.
The MEA’s statement didn’t mince words. It explicitly advised all Indian nationals to refrain from any travel to Syria until further notice. For those already in Syria, the advisory provided crucial contact information for immediate assistance: Indians are urged to contact the Indian Embassy in Damascus via emergency helpline +963 993385973 (WhatsApp enabled) or email hoc.damascus@mea.gov.in for updates and support. The MEA further urged those currently in Syria who can, to depart via the earliest available commercial flights. For those unable to leave immediately, the advisory stresses the importance of exercising extreme caution, minimizing movement, and prioritizing personal safety.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, during a press briefing, confirmed that approximately 90 Indian nationals are currently in Syria, including 14 working with various UN organizations. He emphasized that the MEA is closely monitoring the situation and maintaining constant communication with Indian citizens in Syria to ensure their safety and well-being. Jaiswal’s comments underscored the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens amidst the rapidly deteriorating security conditions.
The Syrian opposition forces’ reported seizure of Daraa represents a significant escalation in the conflict. The rebels are reportedly advancing from both the north and south, aiming to encircle Damascus. While the Syrian Defence Ministry has yet to officially confirm the loss of Daraa, local rebel fighters, through their Southern Operations Room, have declared full control over the city and the commencement of security operations.
The situation remains highly fluid and uncertain. The coming days will be crucial in determining the trajectory of the conflict and its impact on the region. The international community, including India, will be watching closely as this critical phase unfolds, particularly given the potential for further humanitarian crises and displacement.
