In a remarkable initiative to strengthen ties with its diaspora, India has launched the ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Express,’ an exclusive tourist train designed to reconnect Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) with their ancestral roots. This innovative project is aimed at individuals aged between 45 and 65, offering them a unique opportunity to delve into the rich cultural and historical tapestry of their heritage.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Express, with a capacity of 156 passengers, will embark on its inaugural journey from Safdarjung Railway Station in New Delhi on January 9, 2025. This meticulously planned three-week expedition will traverse the length and breadth of India, visiting iconic cultural and religious sites that hold immense historical significance. The itinerary includes destinations such as Ayodhya, Patna, Gaya, Varanasi, Mahabalipuram, Rameshwaram, Madurai, Kochi, Goa, Ekta Nagar (Kevadia), Ajmer, Pushkar, and Agra, offering a comprehensive immersion into the diverse facets of Indian heritage.
This extraordinary tour is a testament to the ‘Pravasi Teerth Darshan Yojana,’ a program spearheaded by India’s Ministry of External Affairs in partnership with the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). The scheme emphasizes the importance of connecting the diaspora with their roots and provides full sponsorship for this enriching journey. To further facilitate the participation of eligible PIOs, the Government of India will generously subsidize 90 percent of their return airfare from their home countries, making this an incredibly accessible and rewarding experience.
The chosen departure date of January 9, 2025, holds profound significance, as it marks the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s historic return to India from South Africa in 1915. This date serves as a poignant reminder of the deep connection and legacy that binds India and its diaspora across generations. The Pravasi Bharatiya Express embodies this spirit of heritage, offering a unique platform for PIOs to reconnect with their roots, experience the cultural vibrancy of India, and celebrate their shared history.
