President Droupadi Murmu has emphasized India’s dedication to offering high-quality education at a fraction of the cost of Western institutions, specifically targeting students from Africa, including Algeria. This message was delivered during her recent visit to Algeria, part of a three-nation tour that also included Mauritania and Malawi.
President Murmu, who was conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Political Science by the Scientific and Technological Hub, Martyr Ihaddaden Abdelhafid University of Algeria, expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating that it was an honor “for India more than for her as an individual.” This honor acknowledges her unwavering advocacy for promoting scientific knowledge and educational access across all social groups in India.
During her speech, President Murmu emphasized India’s role in providing quality education at an affordable cost, particularly to students from Africa, including Algeria. She stated, “India provides quality education at a fraction of the cost of Western institutions to an ever-increasing number of students from Africa, including from Algeria.” She also highlighted various scholarships and fellowships offered by India to African students, urging Algeria’s educational institutions, government departments, and youth to take advantage of these opportunities.
President Murmu also took the opportunity to reflect on the historic bond between India and Algeria, tracing it back to Algeria’s fight for liberation. She recalled India’s unwavering support for Algeria’s independence struggle at the United Nations and other international forums. “India-Algeria relations date back to the days of the Algerian liberation struggle against the colonizing regime, when India advocated the cause of Algerian independence at the United Nations and other international forums,” she stated.
Expressing optimism about the future of bilateral relations, President Murmu said, “The current developments are a good beginning. Our relations are a long way from reaching their potential, which can be achieved by the hard-working young people of our two nations. I am convinced of the power of the youth of this country and truly believe in their capabilities to take Algeria on a path of glorious development.”
As President Murmu concludes her three-nation tour, departing from Malawi on October 19th, she leaves behind a renewed hope for deeper collaboration and engagement between the four countries in the coming years. This visit has highlighted the potential for a strengthened partnership between India and African nations, particularly in the realm of education and development.
