External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar confirmed on Tuesday that former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is currently in India, and the Indian government is offering her all possible support. Jaishankar addressed the situation in Bangladesh during a parliamentary session, stating that after a meeting with security leaders, Prime Minister Hasina decided to resign. Subsequently, she requested permission to travel to India at short notice, arriving in Delhi on Monday evening.
Earlier, Jaishankar briefed an all-party meeting on the situation in Bangladesh, highlighting the government’s communication with the Bangladesh Army and assuring appropriate action at the right time. He expressed appreciation for the unanimous support and understanding received from the meeting participants. Sources indicate that over 20,000 Indian nationals are present in Bangladesh, with approximately 8,000 already returning. The Indian government maintains contact with Indian citizens, and the High Commission in Bangladesh remains operational.
During the meeting, the focus was emphasized on protecting minorities in Bangladesh. Rahul Gandhi, a prominent opposition leader, inquired about India’s short-term and long-term strategies regarding the situation. The government responded that the situation is dynamic and under constant analysis. Gandhi also raised concerns about potential foreign involvement, which the government assured is being thoroughly investigated. After receiving the briefing, Gandhi expressed support for the actions taken by the government.
Bangladesh is currently facing political instability following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, which occurred amidst widespread protests. The protests, initially driven by student demands for an end to the quota system for government jobs, have escalated into anti-government demonstrations. In Dhaka, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement proposed the formation of an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus to address the ongoing challenges.
Following her resignation, Sheikh Hasina arrived in India on Monday evening. It remains unclear if she will continue staying in Delhi or relocate to another location. The current situation in Bangladesh remains fluid and continues to evolve.
