India Orders Quality Testing of Spices Following Bans by Singapore and Hong Kong

New Delhi, April 22: Following bans on certain products from Indian spice brands MDH and Everest by Singapore and Hong Kong, the Centre has instructed food safety commissioners nationwide to collect samples of spices from all brands for quality testing.

According to FSSAI sources, samples will be taken from all brands, not just MDH and Everest, and a quality report is anticipated within 20 days. The Spices Board of India is also investigating the bans imposed by Hong Kong and Singapore.

Hong Kong raised concerns about three MDH and Everest Fish Curry Masala products due to impermissibly high levels of ethylene oxide, a known carcinogen. Singapore has also ordered a recall of Everest’s Fish Curry Masala.

The sampling process has already begun, and within four days, spice samples will be collected from all manufacturing units. The results of the quality testing are expected in about 20 days.
