India Pays Tribute to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 60th Death Anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying tribute to India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, on his 60th death anniversary. Taking to social media, PM Modi expressed his homage to the former Prime Minister, acknowledging his contributions to the nation. Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress (INC) organized a commemoration ceremony to honor Nehru’s legacy. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and former President Sonia Gandhi paid floral tributes at Nehru’s memorial, ‘Shantivan.’ Kharge hailed Nehru as the ‘architect of modern India,’ emphasizing his unparalleled contributions to India’s scientific, economic, and industrial advancements. He highlighted Nehru’s unwavering commitment to democracy and his role as a source of inspiration for the nation. Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi also paid tribute to his great-grandfather, remembering him as a ‘visionary’ who devoted his life to nation-building, establishing democracy, and laying the foundation for the Indian Constitution. He affirmed that Nehru’s values continue to guide the country. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh recounted Nehru’s final days, sharing anecdotes about his last press interaction and his profound connection to Buddhism. He noted that Nehru’s decision to incorporate elements of Emperor Ashoka’s legacy, such as the chakra in the national flag and the Sarnath lion capital as the national emblem, reflected his desire to connect India’s ancient heritage with the newly established republic. India’s first and longest-serving Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, passed away in office in 1964, leaving behind an enduring legacy of leadership and nation-building.
