The Indian government has revealed a concerning statistic – 633 incidents of Indian student deaths abroad have been reported in the last five years. This data, presented in India’s Parliament, highlights the significant risks faced by Indian students studying overseas.
Canada topped the list with 172 reported deaths, followed by the US with 108. The UK, Australia, and Russia were also among the countries with a substantial number of reported deaths.
The deaths were attributed to various reasons, including natural causes, accidents, and medical conditions. However, a separate data point sheds light on a more alarming trend – 19 Indian students died abroad due to attacks during this period. Canada again had the highest number of deaths from attacks (9), followed by the US (6).
The Indian government stated that ensuring the safety and security of Indian students abroad is a top priority. Indian embassies and consulates maintain regular contact with Indian students enrolled in universities abroad.
Furthermore, the government revealed that 48 Indian students were deported from the US in the last three years. While the specific reasons for deportation are not publicly disclosed by US authorities, unauthorized employment, unauthorized withdrawal from classes, expulsion, suspension, and failure to meet visa requirements are cited as potential factors.
