The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is taking a proactive approach to ensuring its athletes perform at their peak during the Paris Olympics by sending a dedicated sleep expert to the Games. Dr. Monika Sharma, a specialist in Behavioral Sleep Medicine, will be on hand to address the anxieties and sleep disruptions that can often plague athletes during major competitions.
Dr. Sharma’s involvement stems from her work with athletes at Sleep Moksha, a sleep wellness clinic in Panchkula, Haryana. The IOA recognized the positive impact of her sleep optimization program and invited her to support the national athletes in achieving the necessary rest for peak performance.
Sleep is a crucial component of an athlete’s recovery process, aiding both physiological and cognitive functions. However, the demanding schedules and pressures faced by modern athletes can make it challenging to maintain healthy sleep habits. Dr. Sharma has extensive experience addressing common athlete concerns, such as difficulty falling asleep and fragmented sleep patterns.
The IOA is implementing a comprehensive approach to sleep management. Athletes are receiving personalized sleep training, with some having already traveled to Europe to adapt to the Parisian time zone and environment. The athletes will be equipped with sleep travel kits containing eye masks, earplugs, and neck pillows, and will have access to sleep pods in the Games Village. These measures aim to mitigate sleep disturbances caused by jet lag and unfamiliar surroundings.
Dr. Sharma emphasizes the importance of natural sleep recovery over medication. She cautions against the risks of sleep medication, noting its potential for addiction and its ability to address only symptoms rather than underlying causes. Her approach prioritizes a holistic understanding of sleep issues and promotes natural sleep strategies.
With the Indian contingent aiming for even greater success than their record-breaking seven medals at the Tokyo Olympics, the IOA is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the athletes are prepared for the challenges of the Paris Games. By addressing the crucial aspect of sleep, the IOA aims to support the athletes in achieving their full potential on the world stage.
