India Slaps Anti-Dumping Duties on Epichlorohydrin Imports from China, South Korea, and Thailand

India has taken a decisive step to protect its domestic adhesive industry by imposing anti-dumping duties on imports of Epichlorohydrin from China, South Korea, and Thailand. This move comes after an investigation by the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) concluded that Epichlorohydrin was being exported to India from these countries at prices significantly lower than market value, causing substantial harm to local manufacturers.

The investigation highlighted a concerning trend of dumping, where goods are sold in a foreign market at below-cost prices, often with the intention of undercutting domestic competitors. This practice can severely impact local industries, leading to job losses and a decline in competitiveness.

To counteract this unfair trade practice, India has levied anti-dumping duties on Epichlorohydrin imports from the aforementioned countries. These duties, which will remain in place for five years unless revoked, aim to create a level playing field for Indian manufacturers.

The Department of Revenue, in its notification, stated that the anti-dumping duty “shall be levied for a period of five years (unless revoked, superseded or amended earlier).”

This move is in line with India’s commitment to fair trade practices under the World Trade Organization (WTO). Anti-dumping duties are a legitimate countermeasure countries can employ to address unfair competition and safeguard their domestic industries.

This is not the first time India has implemented anti-dumping measures. The country has a history of taking action against cheap imports from various nations, including China, to ensure the health and vitality of its domestic industries.

By protecting its domestic adhesive industry, India is taking a proactive approach to ensuring its economic well-being and promoting fair trade practices within the global market.
