India Swelters Under Intense Heatwaves

India is experiencing intense heatwaves that are expected to continue until May 5th. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that several regions will be affected by these extreme conditions, including parts of Gangetic West Bengal and isolated pockets across Bihar.

On Thursday, several cities in India recorded scorching temperatures, with the top ten hottest places being:

1. Nandyal (Rayalaseema) -46.2
2. Palawancha (Telangana)- 45.3
3. Bolangir (Odisha) – 45.0
4. Retanchintala (Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yaman)- 44.8
5. Karur Paramathi (Tamil Nadu)- 44.3
6. Kalaikunda (Gangetic Wes Bengal)- 44.2
7. Vellore (Tamil Nadu)-43.6
8. Dharmapuri (Tamil Nadu)- 42.5
9. Sheikhpura (Bihar)- 41.1
10. Balurghat (Sub-Himalayan West Bengal) 41.0

The Odisha district of Bolangir recorded a temperature of 45 degrees Celsius, leading the weather office to issue a heatwave warning for 15 districts in the state. Hot and humid weather is also anticipated in isolated pockets of Maharashtra and Karnataka Coast, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Tamilnadu.

In response to the heatwave, the Kerala government has ordered the closure of educational institutions until May 6th. The Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has urged residents to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day, between 11 am and 3 pm.

The IMD’s forecast indicates that there will be no significant change in day temperatures over the next three days in many parts of Odisha. However, the department has issued a heatwave warning for the next two weeks for several areas across the country.
