India is set to revolutionize international air travel by introducing facial recognition technology (FRT), with a pilot project planned for June 2025. The initiative, led by the Digi Yatra Foundation, aims to enhance airport security and expedite passenger processing through the use of facial biometrics.
According to Digi Yatra Foundation CEO Suresh Khadakbhavi, the pilot project will involve collaboration between two countries, marking a significant step towards a seamless and efficient travel experience. The DigiYatra platform, currently accessible for domestic flights within India, facilitates contactless entry and security clearance at airports. It allows travelers to store their ID and travel documents securely, eliminating the need for physical checks.
To extend its reach to international travelers, the foundation plans to work closely with the Bureau of Immigration and visa-issuing agencies. This will enable international visitors flying in and out of India to benefit from the streamlined processes facilitated by DigiYatra.
The platform is currently operational at several major Indian airports, including Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, as well as Pune International Airport and Cochin International Airport.
In addition to the expanded use of facial recognition technology, Digi Yatra is also planning to introduce e-passports for Indian international travelers. This move follows the example of countries like Singapore and those in the European Union, where e-passports are already commonplace. The introduction of e-passports is expected to further enhance the efficiency and security of international travel for Indian citizens.
With the implementation of these innovative initiatives, India is poised to become a leader in utilizing technology to enhance the travel experience for both domestic and international passengers.
