India to Soon Have World’s Second-Largest Urban Metro System

Underlining the significant progress made in urban metro transport in the past decade, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri emphasized the country’s projected achievement of having the world’s second-largest urban metro system within the next two and a half years. This progress has resulted in an impressive daily ridership of 1 crore passengers, with 73 lakh utilizing the metro system in the capital region alone. The expansion of urban transport has significantly improved connectivity and accessibility within major cities, despite growing populations.

Puri further highlighted the substantial development in the criminal justice system and police modernization. The government’s initiatives, including the police modernization scheme, aim to transform police forces into tech-savvy, well-trained, and well-equipped establishments. These reforms, spearheaded under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, are expected to be accelerated in the coming five years.

Former Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi commended the Modi government’s encouragement of out-of-the-box thinking within the security establishment. He lauded the efforts in preventing bomb attacks and praised the expansion of the Delhi Metro, which has effectively addressed the traffic indiscipline prevalent in the 1970s.

Puri emphasized that discussions extended beyond the progress made in the last ten years, delving into potential initiatives for further development in the third term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The interactive session generated valuable suggestions from distinguished participants, addressing various aspects of governance and future plans.

The Minister also acknowledged the diminished influence of Pakistan and the ongoing developments in the region, although he refrained from making specific predictions about future events.
