Anand Mahindra, the renowned Indian industrialist and philanthropist, took to Twitter to celebrate India’s success at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Three Indian films, ‘All We Imagine As Light’ by Payal Kapadia, ‘The Shameless’ by Chidananda S. Naik, and ‘Ee Mae Kya Bhool Gai Main’ by Anasuya Sengupta, each won prestigious awards in their respective categories at the prestigious film festival.
Payal Kapadia, a graduate of the Film & Television Institute of India (FTII), made history by winning the Grand Prix award for her film ‘All We Imagine As Light’, which narrates the story of three women from Mumbai undertaking a road trip to a beach town. This accolade marks the first Grand Prix award for an Indian film in 30 years, since Shaji N. Karun’s film ‘Swaham’ achieved this feat in 1994.
Anasuya Sengupta won the Best Actress award in the Un Certain Regard category for her performance in ‘The Shameless’, directed by Konstantin Bojanov. The film explores the friendship between two sex workers. Sengupta’s award makes her the first Indian actress to win in this category.
India’s strong presence at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, with eight films either from India or featuring Indian themes, showcases the nation’s significant contribution to global cinema and the growing recognition of Indian filmmakers on the international stage.
