India Unveils Comprehensive Medical Support for Athletes at Paris Olympics

For the first time, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), with support from the Union Sports Ministry and the Sports Authority of India (SAI), has established a comprehensive medical support system for Indian athletes participating in the upcoming Paris Olympics.

A 13-member medical team, led by renowned sports injury specialist Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, will be responsible for addressing health concerns and managing injuries. The team will be augmented by a sleep therapist, physiotherapists, nutritionists, and psychologists, ensuring a holistic approach to athlete well-being. A dedicated recovery and rehabilitation room will operate around the clock, providing athletes with access to essential facilities.

“Since the sports science team was announced, our first priority has been getting to know our athletes,” stated Dr. Pardiwala during a virtual media interaction on Saturday. “This is crucial from a threefold perspective: sports medicine, sports nutrition, and mental conditioning. It’s impossible to begin this process at the last minute.” He further emphasized the team’s proactive approach, stating that “the nutritionist, the mental conditioning coach, the physiotherapist, and the sports medicine specialist have been visiting different training camps…this allows us to better understand our athletes, their conditions, and ensure they receive the best possible support.”

Dr. Pardiwala also revealed that sleep pods will be available for athletes who require a quick nap for rest and recovery. While the Games Village will not be air-conditioned, the organizers have designed the village to naturally stay cool, with temperatures expected to range between 18 to 26 degrees Celsius. This decision reflects the organizers’ commitment to making the Olympics greener. Dr. Pardiwala indicated that athletes have expressed minimal concern about the lack of air-conditioning due to the expected temperatures.
