India Weather Update: Heavy Rains Forecast, Air Quality Mixed

Get ready for a wet week in India as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts heavy rainfall in several parts of the country. On September 23rd, the IMD issued yellow alerts for Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana, warning of potential heavy rainfall in these regions.

While rain is expected in many parts of India, the air quality picture remains mixed. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, Sikkim’s Gangtok boasts the cleanest air, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 18, falling under the ‘good’ category as of Monday morning. On the other hand, Gujarat’s Nandesari faces the worst air quality, with an AQI of 226, placing it in the ‘poor’ category. Delhi’s air quality is currently ‘moderate’ with an AQI of 155, while Mumbai enjoys ‘satisfactory’ air quality with an AQI of 54.

Here’s a breakdown of the IMD’s regional weather forecasts:

South Peninsular India:

Isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated in Karnataka’s south interior region, coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Puducherry. Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are expected to experience downpours until September 25th, while Rayalaseema and Karnataka’s north interior regions could see heavy rainfall until September 24th.

Central India:

The IMD predicts isolated heavy rainfall in Vidarbha, Maharashtra, and wet spells in Chhattisgarh until September 26th. Madhya Pradesh is also expected to experience wet weather from September 24th to 27th.

East and Northeast India:

The IMD’s latest weather bulletin states that isolated heavy rainfall is very likely in Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura between September 23rd and 28th. Odisha is expected to experience similar conditions from September 23rd to 26th, Arunachal Pradesh from September 24th to 28th, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, and Jharkhand from September 25th to 27th. Gangetic West Bengal is expected to see rainfall on September 25th and 26th, followed by Bihar on September 27th and 28th. Additionally, hot and humid weather conditions are anticipated in Northeast India on September 23rd.

West India:

The IMD forecasts isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in Konkan & Goa between September 23rd and 26th, Madhya Maharashtra from September 23rd to 27th, and Marathwada from September 23rd to 25th. Gujarat is expected to experience isolated heavy rainfall between September 25th and 27th.

Northwest India:

The weather agency predicts light to moderate rainfall in Northwest India, excluding West Rajasthan, where mainly dry weather conditions are expected to prevail until September 29th.
