India Weather Update: Monsoon Retreat, Localized Rainfall, and Improved Air Quality

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released its latest weather update, providing insights into the ongoing monsoon season and forecasting localized rainfall across India. The bulletin indicates that the western end of the monsoon trough is situated north of its normal position, while the eastern end is south of its normal position.

The IMD has also reported that a depression over Jharkhand and adjoining north Chhattisgarh has weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area. As the monsoon season draws to a close, the weather department has not issued any heavy rainfall alerts for September 19th and 20th across India. However, Kolkata is likely to experience precipitation until September 22nd, while Mumbai will witness downpours until September 24th.

For Central India, the IMD predicts “light to moderate rainfall” in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh until September 25th. Additionally, “isolated heavy rainfall” is expected in West Madhya Pradesh on September 24th, East Madhya Pradesh on September 23rd and 24th, and in Chhattisgarh between September 22nd and 24th.

In Northwest India, the IMD forecasts “light rainfall” until September 24th. Notably, “isolated very heavy rainfall” is likely in Uttarakhand on September 24th.

For East and Northeast India, the IMD predicts “fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.” Scattered to widespread light to moderate rainfall is also expected in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura until September 25th.

Regarding West and South Peninsular India, the weather bulletin dated September 18th states, “Fairly Widespread to Widespread light/moderate rainfall very likely over Konkan & Goa; Isolated to scattered light/moderate rainfall very likely over remaining region during the week.”

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Delhi has forecasted generally cloudy skies with light rain and thunderstorms, accompanied by strong surface winds reaching speeds of 25-35 kmph during the day. The maximum temperature in the national capital is expected to settle around degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature will hover around degrees Celsius.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the national capital registered an AQI of 63 in the ‘satisfactory’ category, a rare occurrence. The Meteorological Centre has issued a nowcast warning, predicting light to moderate rainfall in Delhi and the NCR region over the next hour. Wet spells are likely in Gannaur (Haryana), Baraut, Bagpat (UP), Kalkaji, Tughlakabad, Noida, Greater Noida, Faridabad, Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Karnal, Panipat (Haryana), Saharanpur, Gangoh, and Shamli (UP).
