India Welcomes Chagos Islands Agreement, Played Key Role in Negotiations

India has expressed its support for the agreement reached between the United Kingdom and Mauritius regarding the return of Mauritian sovereignty over the Chagos archipelago, including the strategically important Diego Garcia. The statement came shortly after Britain announced its decision to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, a move that ensures the continued operation of the UK-US military base at Diego Garcia and potentially allows for the return of islanders displaced decades ago.

India has consistently maintained its support for Mauritius’s claim to sovereignty over the Chagos Islands, aligning with its stance on decolonization and its commitment to upholding the territorial integrity of nations. This position is also rooted in India’s close and longstanding partnership with Mauritius. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized India’s dedication to collaborating with Mauritius and other like-minded partners to enhance maritime safety and security, thereby contributing to greater peace and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region.

The agreement has also been welcomed by US President Joe Biden, who sees it as a crucial step in securing the effective operation of Diego Garcia, a strategically significant airbase in the Indian Ocean, for the next century. British Foreign Minister David Lammy stated that the deal resolves the long-standing dispute over the sovereignty of the islands, the last British overseas territory in Africa. He highlighted that ongoing legal challenges had jeopardized the long-term future of the Diego Garcia base. The base, recognized for its strategic importance during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts as a launchpad for long-range bombers, is now guaranteed to remain operational for at least 99 years.

India reportedly played a vital, albeit discreet, role in the negotiations that led to the Chagos archipelago agreement. Sources cited by the news agency ANI revealed that India strongly supported Mauritius’s principled position, advocating for the removal of the last vestiges of colonialism. However, India also consistently encouraged both parties to engage in open-minded negotiations, aiming for outcomes that would benefit all involved.

Sources emphasized that India’s role involved backing Mauritius’s position while simultaneously fostering an environment conducive to a mutually beneficial outcome. The agreement, they believe, represents a win for all parties involved and will contribute to long-term security in the Indian Ocean region.
