India has once again demonstrated its prowess in archery on the global stage. At the Para Archery Ranking Series in the Czech Republic, the Indian duo of Sheetal Devi and Sarita triumphed over Jodie Grinham and Phoebe Paterson Pine of Great Britain in the women’s compound team final, securing the gold medal with a score of 157 out of a possible 160. This victory adds another feather to the cap of Indian archery, highlighting the dedication and talent of its athletes.
While the women’s team celebrated their victory, the men’s compound team fell short of the top spot. Rakesh Kumar and Shyam Sundar Swami faced a tough challenge against Alisina Manshaezadeh and Hadi Nori of Iran, ultimately falling 149-156 to secure the silver medal. Despite the loss, the team demonstrated resilience and skill, showcasing the depth of talent within Indian archery.
Sheetal Devi’s triumph holds special significance. Earlier this year, she was awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award for her exceptional performance at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games, where she secured two gold and a silver medal. At just 16 years old, Sheetal’s journey is one of inspiration and resilience. Born with phocomelia, a condition that resulted in underdeveloped limbs, Sheetal has defied all odds to excel in archery. Without arms, she uses her feet to wield the bow and arrow, showcasing remarkable determination and skill. She began training full-time in archery only two years ago, highlighting her natural talent and rapid progress.
Sarita’s contribution to the team’s success was equally impressive. She secured a bronze medal in the women’s compound archery open section of the Para Asian Archery Championship, showcasing her skill and competitive spirit. In the all-Indian play-off for bronze, Sarita overcame compatriot Jyoti Baliyan with a score of 139-135. In the team event, Sarita partnered with Sheetal Devi, securing a silver medal. They faced each other in the individual event semifinal, with Sheetal ultimately advancing to the final. While both Indian women missed out on the gold medal, they will be facing each other in the bronze medal match.
Rakesh Kumar also missed out on a gold medal in the men’s individual event but remains in contention for a bronze. He will be facing Thierry Joussaume of France in the bronze medal match, hoping to secure a podium finish. These athletes’ unwavering determination and exceptional talent have once again placed India at the forefront of the international archery scene.
