Most Indian airlines are set to resume their operations to and from Dhaka on Wednesday, a day after cancelling flights to Bangladesh due to violent protests and the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The decision to resume flights comes after Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport reopened on Tuesday morning, following a closure until 11:30 pm on Monday.
Air India will operate its scheduled flight from Delhi to Dhaka on Tuesday evening, with its scheduled services to the Bangladesh capital resuming from August 7th. The airline is offering a one-time waiver on rescheduling for customers with confirmed bookings on any Air India flight to and from Dhaka between August 4th and 7th. This waiver requires the booking to be made on or before August 5th.
Air India emphasized that the safety of their customers and crew remains their top priority. The airline had cancelled its morning flight to Dhaka on Tuesday, and normally operates two daily flights from the national capital to Dhaka.
Vistara, another Indian airline, will also be operating services to Dhaka as per schedule from Wednesday. Vistara operates daily flights from Mumbai and three weekly services from Delhi to Dhaka. Both Vistara and IndiGo had cancelled their Tuesday flights to the Bangladesh capital. An update from IndiGo on Dhaka flights for Wednesday is awaited. IndiGo normally operates one daily flight from Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai to Dhaka, and two daily services to the Bangladesh capital from Kolkata.
Bangladesh has been in a state of uncertainty and volatility following street protests over job quotas that forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee. The situation is expected to remain volatile in the coming days.
