Indian badminton doubles player Ashwini Ponnappa has raised concerns over the lack of individual support provided to her during her preparation for the Paris Olympics. Despite receiving financial assistance from the Sports Ministry, Ponnappa claims the support was insufficient and fell short of meeting her individual needs.
Ponnappa’s disappointment stems from the denial of her request for a personal coach prior to the Games. She also questioned the accuracy of the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) report detailing the financial assistance she received. While the SAI document mentioned a total of Rs 1,62,84,080 under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and Annual Calendar for Training and Competition (ACTC), Ponnappa asserted that she has not received the full amount.
“I’m absolutely shocked… I don’t mind not getting money but telling the nation that I got money is ridiculous. I haven’t received it. Like if you’re talking about national camp, then that 1.5 Crore is spent on all the campers,” Ponnappa told PTI.
“I don’t have a specific coach. As for my personalised trainer, I’m paying for him myself. I’m not taking money from anyone. I’ve played on my own until November (2023). I was included as part of TOPS only after we qualified…”
Ponnappa, a seasoned veteran with three Olympic appearances under her belt, has consistently excelled in international competitions. Her impressive achievements include a gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, silver in 2014, and a bronze in 2018. She also represented India at the London and Rio Olympics alongside her former partner, Jwala Gutta.
Despite her accomplishments, Ponnappa feels the support she received for the Paris Olympics was inadequate. The lack of a dedicated coach and the alleged discrepancy in financial assistance have raised concerns about the level of individual support provided to athletes under the ministry’s schemes.
Ponnappa’s comments highlight a broader issue of transparency and accountability in the allocation and disbursement of funds intended for athletes. It is crucial to ensure that athletes receive the necessary support, both financially and in terms of coaching, to achieve their full potential on the global stage. Ponnappa’s disappointment serves as a reminder that the journey to Olympic success requires a comprehensive and personalized approach that goes beyond just financial assistance.
