A fire broke out on Sunday, July 21st, aboard the Indian Naval Ship Brahmaputra, a multi-role frigate, while it was undergoing refit at the naval dockyard in Mumbai. The Indian Navy confirmed that the warship experienced severe listing to one side, known as the port side. Despite all efforts by the crew, the ship could not be righted and continued to list further, eventually resting on its side alongside its berth.
The Indian Navy reported that all personnel onboard have been accounted for except one junior sailor, who is currently missing. Search operations are underway to locate the missing sailor. An inquiry has been ordered by the Indian Navy to investigate the accident and determine the cause of the fire.
The fire was brought under control by the ship’s crew with assistance from firefighters at the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, and other ships in the harbor by the morning of July 22nd. Following the fire, further actions were taken, including sanitization checks to assess the residual risk of fire. More details regarding the incident are awaited.
