Indian Shutler Suhas Yathiraj Secures Spot in Paris Paralympics Badminton Final

Suhas Yathiraj, a silver medalist from the Tokyo Paralympics, is set to make history at the Paris Paralympics. The 41-year-old shuttler, a 2007 batch IAS officer, has secured a spot in the men’s singles SL4 final after defeating fellow Indian Sukant Kadam in straight games (21-17, 21-12). This victory makes him the first Indian badminton player to win back-to-back medals at the Paralympics.

Yathiraj’s journey to the final is a testament to his exceptional perseverance. The computer engineer-turned-IAS officer, who served as the District Magistrate of Gautam Buddh Nagar during the COVID-19 pandemic and has also held the position of DM of Prayagraj, never allowed his ankle impairment to deter his passion for badminton. He currently serves as the Secretary and Director-General of Youth Welfare and Prantiya Rakshak Dal under the Uttar Pradesh government.

In the final, he will face France’s Lucas Mazur, who defeated him in the Tokyo Paralympics final three years ago. This rematch promises to be an exciting battle as Yathiraj aims for gold. Meanwhile, Sukant Kadam will compete for the bronze medal.

Yathiraj’s remarkable achievement keeps India’s gold medal hopes alive at the Paris Paralympics, alongside Nitesh Kumar (SL3). His journey from administration to the badminton court is an inspiring story of dedication and resilience, proving that even with challenges, dreams can be achieved.
