Indian Sports Administrator Randhir Singh Elected President of Olympic Council of Asia

On Sunday, veteran sports administrator Randhir Singh made history as the first Indian to be elected as president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). This historic election took place during the 44th General Assembly of the OCA. Singh, a 77-year-old former Olympic shooter, will serve as president from 2024 to 2028. His election was unanimous, as he was the sole eligible candidate.

Singh has been acting president of the OCA since 2021. He took on this role after Kuwait’s Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah was banned from sports administration for 15 years due to ethics violations. His official appointment as president was witnessed by Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and notable sports figures from all 45 Asian countries.

Randhir Singh has been a major force in sports administration for many years. He was a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 2001 to 2014 and remains an honorary member of this global sports body. His family has a long history of involvement in sports. Born in Patiala, Punjab, Singh is related to several prominent figures. His uncle, Maharaja Yadavindra Singh, played Test cricket for India and was an IOC member. His father, Bhalindra Singh, also played first-class cricket and served as an IOC member from 1947 to 1992.
