Indian Student’s Dream Turns into Nightmare After Assualt in Hobart

Devarshi Deka, an Indian student who came to the University of Tasmania to pursue a Masters of Professional Accounting, had his dreams shattered after an alleged assault last November. While celebrating with friends after securing a part-time job, Deka was rushed to the hospital and placed in a medically induced coma for three and a half months. Upon regaining consciousness, he found himself with a severe brain injury that impaired vision in his left eye and rendered him unable to walk. Now living with disabilities that have drastically altered his life, Deka expresses his gratitude for the lifesaving treatment he received at the Royal Hobart Hospital and the ongoing care at the city’s repatriation center. However, his access to government support is limited as an overseas student, despite his need for specialized equipment and assistance if he is to remain in Hobart. Deka’s friend, Rishabh Kaushik, highlights the urgent need for government assistance to help Deka arrange for the necessary care once he leaves the repatriation center. The financial burden of his ongoing care is substantial, reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars, which is beyond the means of Deka, his family, and the community. Without government support, Deka’s only option may be to return to India, potentially before his student visa expires in March next year. Kaushik emphasizes that doctors have indicated that Deka will be paraplegic for the rest of his life. Deka’s story is a sobering reminder of the challenges faced by international students who experience life-altering events while studying overseas. The lack of government support for such students can leave them vulnerable and in dire need of assistance. As Deka and his friends navigate this difficult situation, their appeal for government intervention highlights the importance of providing adequate support to international students in times of crisis.
