Indian Traveller Warns of Taxi Scam in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan, with its captivating history and stunning landscapes, has become a popular destination for budget-conscious Indian travellers seeking an international adventure. The country also offers visa-free travel for Indian citizens, making it an even more enticing option. However, while Kazakhstan promises an exciting journey, it’s important to be aware of potential scams, especially those targeting unsuspecting tourists.

Recently, Indian vlogger Komal Maheshwari took to Instagram to share her experience of being scammed by a taxi driver in Kazakhstan. In a series of videos, she detailed her encounter, highlighting the importance of being vigilant while travelling in a foreign country.

Maheshwari’s journey began with a plan to get a local SIM card at the airport, but she was surprised to find that there were no kiosks available. As she made her way outside the airport, she was approached by a man who claimed to be an authorised taxi driver. He offered to take her and her travel partner to their hotel for a seemingly reasonable 1,000 tenge (approximately ₹ 173).

However, red flags started to appear as they got into the taxi. Another passenger was already seated inside, claiming to be the driver’s business partner. Further adding to their unease, they noticed a child lock on the backseat.

The journey took a sinister turn when they reached their destination. The driver demanded a staggering 77,000 tenge (approximately ₹ 13,000) for the ride, a stark contrast to the initial agreed price. The driver became aggressive when they refused to pay such an inflated amount, even trying to negotiate. Eventually, they were forced to pay 30,000 tenge (nearly ₹ 5,500) to end the ordeal.

Maheshwari’s experience serves as a stark reminder for travellers to be cautious and vigilant when using taxi services in Kazakhstan. It highlights the importance of being aware of common scams and taking necessary precautions to avoid falling prey to them.

Before taking a taxi, it’s crucial to research and choose reputable companies. Using ride-hailing apps or pre-booking a taxi can also offer more security and prevent potentially inflated fares. Always confirm the price before starting the journey and be assertive in refusing any unreasonable demands. If you feel uncomfortable or suspect foul play, it’s best to exit the vehicle immediately and seek assistance.

While Kazakhstan offers an unforgettable travel experience, staying vigilant and being aware of potential scams can help ensure a safe and enjoyable journey.
