Indians Urged to Question Food Consumption Amidst High Sugar Content and Adulteration Concerns

Indians have been advised to be mindful of what they consume due to the high sugar content and adulteration prevalent in various food items. This warning was issued by Zerodha founder Nithin Kamath, who highlighted the excessive sugar levels in food and the prevalence of adulteration in masalas, milk, and protein products. Kamath emphasized that these practices, along with the use of substandard chemicals in food coloring and preservatives, are detrimental to health.

“We Indians need to question what goes into the food we consume. The more we ask, the better choices we will have. The sugar content in most of our food is ridiculous. Adulteration in food items like masalas, milk and protein. And then there are substandard chemicals used in food coloring and preservatives in fruits and vegetables. They are all slowly killing us. This applies to packaged foods and food from many restaurants,” Kamath wrote on social media platform X.

While sharing the post, Kamath shared news about the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) recommending the maximum limit of sugar content in packaged foods and beverages. Nithin Kamath’s post on X garnered a myriad of reactions from social media users, with many agreeing with his opinion and several others flagging concerns towards specific brands and products.

The National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), which works with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), has recommended a maximum limit of sugar content that can be included in packaged foods and beverages. The revised dietary guidelines will help limit the addition of sugar to soft drinks and junk food. The move could potentially impact branded soft drink, juices, cookies, ice-creams, cereals, etc.
