India’s Air Quality and Weather Update: Sikkim Leads with Clean Air, Heavy Rains Predicted in Northeast

India’s air quality and weather landscape is a mixed bag, with some regions enjoying clean air while others brace for heavy rainfall. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Gangtok, Sikkim, recorded the best air quality at 6:00 AM on Sunday, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 15, falling in the ‘good’ category. In contrast, Nandesari in Gujarat registered the worst air quality with an AQI of 235, also in the ‘good’ category. Delhi’s air quality sits at a ‘moderate’ level with an AQI of 138, while Mumbai enjoys ‘satisfactory’ air quality with an AQI of 58.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for September 22, predicting heavy rainfall in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. For Central India, the IMD forecasts heavy rainfall in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra between September 23 and 27, Chhattisgarh between September 23 and 26, and Madhya Pradesh from September 24 to 27.

The IMD’s latest press release dated September 21 states that isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura for the next 7 days; Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya from September 23 to 27; Bihar from September 23 to 25; Andaman & Nicobar Islands on September 23; and West Bengal and Sikkim on September 25. Hot and humid weather conditions are anticipated in West Bengal’s Sub-Himalayan region and Sikkim on September 22. Similar conditions are expected in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura until September 23.

In Northwest and West India, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Marathwada on September 23 and 24, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, and Goa from September 24 to 27, and Gujarat Region from September 25 to 27.

The IMD predicts heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh’s coastal region and Yanam until September 23. Karnataka’s North interior region is expected to experience downpours until September 24. Telangana can expect fresh wet spells from September 23 to 25, while Karnataka’s South interior region may receive precipitation on September 22 and 23. Rayalaseema may get wet spells on September 24 and 25.
