India’s Goalless Draw Against Mauritius in Intercontinental Cup Opener Raises Concerns

Manolo Marquez’s debut as head coach of the Indian football team did not get off to the start he hoped for, as India drew 0-0 against Mauritius in the opening match of the Intercontinental Cup in Hyderabad on Tuesday. Despite being ranked 124th in FIFA, significantly higher than Mauritius’ 174th position, India struggled to break down the visitors at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium. The draw came on the heels of India’s failure to qualify for the third round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, which led to the departure of former coach Igor Stimac.

India’s defense faced early challenges, with Mauritius securing a set-piece in the eighth minute and directing the ball into India’s box. Fortunately, Jeakson Singh was able to clear the danger. Another opportunity arose for Mauritius shortly after, but Jay Shah intervened to prevent a goal. Despite being the lower-ranked team, Mauritius demonstrated an aggressive style of play and appeared more threatening throughout the first half, generating more chances than the home team.

While India had some near-misses, including a shot by Manvir Singh that was saved by Mauritius goalkeeper Kevin Obrian, they were ultimately unable to find the back of the net. A fine cross from Lallianzuala Chhangte in the first half nearly resulted in a goal for India, but Anirudh Thapa couldn’t manage an accurate header. In the second half, India showed more vitality, seeking to create opportunities and put pressure on the visitors. Sahal Abdul Samad, who substituted Thapa, made an impressive run down the flank, but Mauritius had defenders positioned to block the effort.

While both teams created occasional chances in the second half, the execution remained lacking, particularly for India. Mauritius exhibited more cohesion throughout the match. The match showcased the efforts of both teams to gain control and score, with India trying to build momentum under their new coach and Mauritius making their presence felt with their attacking tactics. However, the goalless draw leaves India with a lot to think about as they look ahead to their next Intercontinental Cup matchup.
