India’s Independence Day Weekend Sparks Travel Surge: Goa, Bali, and More

The upcoming five-day weekend, stretching from India’s Independence Day (August 15th) to Rakshabandhan on Monday, has sparked a surge in travel bookings across the country. With an extended holiday providing the perfect opportunity for a long getaway, travel platforms are witnessing a significant increase in demand for both domestic and international destinations.

According to Agoda, a leading digital travel platform, there has been a staggering 266% uptick in search queries compared to the same period last year. Goa has emerged as the top choice for domestic travelers, its sunny beaches and vibrant nightlife proving eternally alluring. Close behind is the serene hill station of Lonavala in Maharashtra, offering a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Internationally, Bali remains a perennial favorite, its exotic beauty and laid-back vibes drawing visitors from all over the world. Singapore, known for its modern architecture, vibrant culture, and delicious food scene, is a close second on the list of international destinations.

For Mumbai-based travelers seeking respite from the city’s clamor, Lonavala is a well-trodden path. However, there are numerous other hidden gems within easy reach that offer unique and memorable experiences.

Jawhar:

Nestled in the Palghar district, Jawhar is a scenic town boasting a captivating waterfall, a majestic palace, a historic fort, and breathtaking viewpoints. Exploring Jawhar is like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into Maharashtra’s rich history and natural beauty.

Lonar:

Lonar Crater, a notified national geo-heritage monument, is a must-visit for anyone interested in geology and natural wonders. This impressive crater, formed by a meteorite impact during the Pleistocene Epoch, is one of only four known hyper-velocity impact craters in basaltic rock on Earth. The lake within the crater is particularly intriguing, its saline and alkaline water changing color from green to pink depending on the season and water conditions. Lonar is easily accessible from the towns of Jalna and Malkapur in Maharashtra.

Mailgad Fort:

For those seeking adventure and history, Mailgad Fort, a relatively unknown gem, offers a thrilling exploration. Its strategic location and fascinating history make it a compelling destination for history buffs and adventurers alike.

Igatpuri:

Escape to the hill station of Igatpuri, nestled within the Western Ghats, for stunning waterfalls, impressive forts, and panoramic views. Witness the breathtaking sunset over the hills, creating a picture-perfect end to your day.

Kolad:

Adventure enthusiasts will find their paradise in Kolad, a charming village on the banks of the Kundalika River. Renowned for its cascading waterfalls, scenic hills, and thrilling white water rafting, Kolad offers an adrenaline-pumping experience. Raft down a 13-kilometer stretch with 10 exhilarating rapids, or try your hand at kayaking, river crossing, and ziplining. The area also boasts the Tamhini Ghat and Devkund waterfalls, as well as the serene Sutarwadi lake. For those who prefer trekking, the popular Plus Valley and several historic forts in the area offer challenging and rewarding hikes.

Alibaug:

Escape the city’s hustle and bustle with a quick trip to Alibaug, a coastal town easily accessible from Mumbai. A scenic drive from the Mumbai suburbs takes less than three hours, or you can take the ferry from the Gateway of India. It’s important to note that only M2M Ferries (allowing you to travel with your car) are operational during the monsoon season.

To accommodate the increased passenger demand during the long weekend, Central Railways will operate 18 special trains between August 15th and 20th. These trains will run on various routes, including LTT Mumbai-Nagpur (2 services), LTT Mumbai-Madgaon (4 services), CSMT Mumbai-Kolhapur (2 services), Pune-Nagpur (4 services), and Kalaburagi-Bengaluru (6 services).
