India concluded the 2024 Paris Olympics with a commendable six medals, securing a joint-second best performance at the Summer Games after Tokyo 2020. This includes a silver and five bronze medals, placing India in 71st position among the 84 countries that managed to win a medal. Here’s a breakdown of India’s medal-winning performances across the four disciplines where they made their mark.
Shooting emerged as India’s most prolific event at Paris 2024, with the athletes securing three medals across disciplines. Manu Bhaker secured India’s first medal of the Games, earning a bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol. She then teamed up with Sarabjot Singh to bag the mixed team bronze in the same event. Swapnil Kushale achieved a historic feat by winning India’s first-ever Olympic medal in the men’s 3 positions rifle event, securing a bronze. These three medals placed India 14th in the shooting standings, with China and South Korea leading with 10 and four medals, respectively.
India’s hockey team continued their tradition of success on the international stage, securing a bronze medal for the second consecutive Olympics. They overcame a strong Spanish team 2-1 in a fiercely contested bronze medal match. Following a comfortable group stage performance, including a victory over arch-rivals Australia, India triumphed over Great Britain in the quarterfinal before falling to Germany in the semi-final. The Netherlands topped the hockey medal tally, winning gold in both the men’s and women’s disciplines. China and Germany followed with their second-place finishes.
Neeraj Chopra, after his gold-winning performance in Tokyo three years ago, added another feather to his cap by securing his second consecutive medal in men’s javelin throw, winning silver with a season-best throw of 89.45m. This silver medal was India’s only medal in track and field, with Avinash Sable being the only other Indian from the 27-strong contingent to make the final. The USA dominated the athletics medal tally with 34 medals, followed by Kenya with 11 and Canada with five.
India maintained their tradition of winning medals in wrestling at the Summer Games, with Aman Sehrawat clinching a bronze in the men’s 57kg freestyle category. The medal tally might be subject to change, however, if the Court for Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rules in favor of awarding Vinesh Phogat a silver medal in the women’s 50kg freestyle. Vinesh was disqualified after failing a weigh-in on the morning of the final. Japan led the medal tally in wrestling with 10 medals, followed by Iran with eight.
