India’s quest for Olympic glory continued on Day 8 of the 2024 Paris Olympics, with a mix of near misses and setbacks.
Manu Bhaker came tantalizingly close to securing a historic third Olympic medal, finishing in fourth place in the women’s 25m pistol final with 28 points. This agonizingly close call followed a thrilling performance throughout the competition.
India’s hopes for a long-awaited archery medal suffered a blow as Deepika Kumari fell short in the quarterfinal of the women’s individual event. The 30-year-old, who had defeated Michelle Kroppen of Germany in the round of 16, ultimately lost to Nam Su-hyeon of South Korea with a score of 4-6. This result extends India’s wait for an archery medal at the Olympics to 52 years.
Meanwhile, in other events, Shubhankar Sharma and Gaganjeet Bhullar finished in T34 and T48 respectively in the Men’s Individual Stroke Play Round 3 of the golf competition.
In the shooting discipline, Raiza Dhillon and Maheshwari Chauhan participated in the Skeet Women’s Qualification Day 1, finishing in 25th and 8th place respectively.
Nethra Kumanan continued her campaign in the women’s dinghy sailing event, finishing 28th in Race 5 and 20th in Race 6. This placed her in 24th position overall.
Vishnu Saravanan, competing in the men’s dinghy event, finished 21st in Race 5 and 13th in Race 6, earning him 23rd place overall.
The boxing event saw Nishant Dev set to face Marco Alonso Verde Alvarez in the men’s 71kg quarterfinal.
