## India’s New Pamban Bridge: A Modern Marvel Despite Safety Concerns
The new Pamban Bridge, connecting the Indian mainland to Rameswaram Island in Tamil Nadu, is generating significant buzz – and not without controversy. While Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has lauded the structure as a “modern engineering marvel” and a “state-of-the-art project” designed to improve safety and speed, the Railway Safety Commissioner recently flagged ‘glaring lapses’ in its construction. Addressing the Need for a New Bridge:
The construction of the new bridge stemmed from the deteriorating condition of the original Pamban Bridge, a historical landmark built in 1914. After serving faithfully for over a century, the old bridge began to show significant signs of corrosion, rendering it unsafe for continued operation. Its decommissioning in December 2022 paved the way for the new, improved structure.
Innovative Design and Technological Advancements:
The new Pamban Bridge boasts several key improvements over its predecessor. Most notably, it features a fully automated vertical lift span, a significant technological advancement that eliminates the need for manual operation. The old bridge, by contrast, relied on two workers on each side to manually lift the span to allow ships to pass. This automated system enhances operational efficiency and safety.
Furthermore, the new bridge is constructed 22 meters above sea level, providing ample clearance for ships, unlike the 19-meter clearance of the old bridge. The new bridge also incorporates a double-track design, enabling increased train traffic and faster transit times. These features reflect the project’s commitment to improving both safety and efficiency.
Project Scale and Cost:
The impressive scale of this engineering feat is evident in its sheer size and cost. The new Pamban Bridge spans over 2.05 kilometers and was constructed at a cost of ₹535 crores (approximately $65 million USD) by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL).
